I am a Professor at Ramapo College teaching in the Environmental Studies program. Your course, ENST20912 World Sustainability, is challenging -- for me and for you-- but the amazing thing is that it is offered at all. Make no mistake, this is daunting stuff for us and for our children. Teaching on-line is brand new to me, too, so your eager participation is appreciated. I have written many, many web pages and will continue to build a web site for World Sustainability. But the Wiki seems to offer an exciting way to collaborate with you: Join our conversation!

I have a Ph.D. from Cornell University in City and Regional Planning, which allowed me to become a maverick "political economist of inhabited places," if that makes sense to you. I have been a Commissioner of Economic Development in Jersey City for nine years, a challenge successfully met -- Jersey City took off. I have extended my range from neighborhoods and cities to regions and now take my concerns and skills to Planet Earth, an endangered species, if you will.  I have just stepped down as President of the staff and faculty labor union here at Ramapo, but I stay active in labor at the statewide level.

World Sustainability is important to me and to Ramapo College. Ramapo makes sustainability central to its Mission Statement and to its Strategic Plan. The Ramapo Board of Trustees has recently approved a Master of Arts in Sustainability Studies, as has the New Jersey Commission on Higher Education. We are projected to start in September 2009, with me as the Director. My colleague, Professor Michael Edelstein, and I have been invited by Paradigm Press write a book on the topic of world sustainability, so this subject is on my mind.

My two daughters are coming back from college and graduate school at the Catholic University of America. Maura, 19, is soon leaving for Honduras to volunteer to help folks in a rural village. Aileen, 23 and a graduate student in Social Work, will soon serve as a counselor to a cultural exchange to Ireland. My wife of over thirty years, Kathleen, will lawyer and remain the most splendid human being I have ever met. I will stay home to teach, write, and research until July and August, which I will spend at my lake-side cottage in central New Hampshire. I will continue my summer projects there with some very dear friends who know about World Sustainability.

Thanks for dropping by.
