Essay Assignment Part II: The Enabling Analysis

Note: As discussed in class, we will add an additional criteria, effective writing style, worth ten points. This expands the paper to forty points toward the final grade

The syllabus defines the essay for Part II of ENST209:

The Enabling Essay will integrate the second section of the course, examining the role of Civil Society and Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in balancing the power of government and business and moving the world toward sustainability. Each group will have selected a continent and each person within that group a country on that continent. Your research into CSO actions toward sustainability within that country will serve as the basis for your part in the group's presentation on grass roots sustainability movements on their continent. In this paper, you will encompass this case as an example within a thorough discussion of the concept of enabling. This assignment draws heavily upon your course readings, lectures, movies and discussions, citing them in your text and in a bibliography. The resulting paper should be around 8 pages.

The enabling analysis is due on or before December 16. Due to the tight turn-around of final grades, this must be a firm deadline. Two points will be deducted for each day late.

The essay draws upon these topics from the syllabus and the schedule on the enabling analysis. This assignment, similar in format and intent to the first essay, counts as 30% of your final grade and is evaluated on these three criteria, 10 points each:

  1. Depth, creativity and critical thinking: The papers should analyze the topic so as to reveal depth of understanding and your ability to think through the essential issues pertaining to the topic.
  2. Integration: The paper should weave together various sources, including reading and observations/experience, into a tight, logical outline.
  3. Content and sources: Source material from books, journals, government documents, selective web sites and other appropriate sources shall be utilized to support your conclusions and demonstrate your grasp of the topic. All sources shall be properly cited in the text and provide a bibliography using either MLA or APA format.
  4. Effective writing style: Your paper should avoid spelling and grammatical errors and generally be well written, clear, concise, and engaging.

A model paper is provided as a demonstration of how to do this assignment effectively. This is not the only way but provides an illustration to guide your response to this assignment.

Your task is to identify solutions involving civil society organizations that address issues connected to sustainability. Your essay must draw heavily upon your course readings, lectures, movies and discussions, cited in your text and in a bibliography. Aim at six or more references, at least four of which should be from the course material.

You may include within your report research that you conduct for your oral presentation on the civil society organization. However, your report should place your CSO within the context of the enabling analysis. You should introduce your paper with an explanation of the problem of lack of sustainability you are addressing with your CSO. Your conclusion should provide an explanation of how your civil society organization promotes World Sustainability.

Your paper is due on or before December 16. Your final paper should be sent as an attachment to the class email, enst209@gmail.com. Papers must not be late, since we have a short turn-around for grading. We reserve the right to deduct points for late papers at the rate of two points per day.

This assignment counts as 40 points toward your final grade and is evaluated on these four criteria, 10 points each. The table below indicates how we will approach grading on the four criteria. Note that we may pro-rate between the scoring categories.
